It's every parent's worst fear. The death of a child. That isn't the way it's supposed to happen, is it? Our children are supposed to reach for their dreams, find joy, and live long productive lives. They're supposed to outlive us by years and years and years, not die before they've even had a chance to live.

But of course, young people do die. Every day, they die, leaving their families behind to pick up the pieces as best they can. It isn't easy, not by a long shot.

"Enlightening Elizabeth Moss" tells the tale of two families struggling to cope with the deaths of their children. Elizabeth's college freshman son died in an accident eight years ago, and the pain still runs deep. She'll never ever "get over it," but she's trying her best to learn how to smile again. Harold's sixteen-year-old daughter committed suicide mere months ago, and losing her has all but sucked the life out of him. The only thing that matters to him any more is slumping on a bench near his daughter's grave... all day... every day. Elizabeth visits the same cemetery twice a year: on her son's birthday, and on the anniversary of the day he died. When she arrives with fresh flowers and tins of tuna to feed the cemetery cats, she's annoyed to find what appears to be a homeless man sitting on ... her bench.

Thus, the two grieving parents meet. In a cemetery. There, on a bench situated among the dead, they help each other, and gradually learn how to live and laugh again.

This book does an excellent job describing the horrific pain of losing a child, so it's understandably heart-wrenching in parts, but that doesn't mean it's depressing. Death is, unfortunately, a part of life, and this tale of two people coming to grips with it and learning to embrace life again is also uplifting and inspirational.
