Many books have been written about our water problems in the United States and around the world.Several of them are quite well done.
The present volume takes a different view-point than most, although it is rife with stories, examples, figures, fascinating facts and engrossing people. What Mr. Fishman wants to do is stress the importance of our relationship with water:what are our expectations, prejudices, hopes, and methodology here in the United States and how does we stack up people elsewhere.Intensive research in Australia and India enriches the book, playing off against in-depth looks at the uses of Lake Meade water, drought in Georgia and a surfeit in Galveston.
Water may not strike one as an exciting subject: never-the-less, it is one of the few things absolutely essential for life, not to mention civilization.

Here were I live we have had several periods of drought during the past thirty years: times when cracked mud was all that could be seen of our largest lake for miles along side the road; when the lawn turned brown, when my Pachysandra beds died off in spite of being irrigated with wash water residue.Drought emergencies were declared, car washing forbidden, lawn watering forbidden, restaurants coerced into providing glasses of water only if asked to do so.Water is a personal thing, a local thing. And not long ago our County Commissioners incredibly granted a bottling firm tax breaks and permission to withdraw millions of gallons of water from our reserves. Is this sane?Compared to places in India: Yes.Compared to Toowoomba, Australia: Yes.Compared to my definition of sanity: No.Well, it is a personal thing, water.
When will your time come to decide what water means to you? This is a good place to start the thought process.Probably a rewarding (and always interesting and entertaining) book for newcomers as well as old-time water worriers.
